Pride in Belonging

15th August 2022

Dear Old Boys

You may recall that the Old Boys' Executive resolved to institute the presentation of Old Boys' Honours ties to members of the association who have distinguished themselves through meritorious endeavours and thereby set an illustrious example for others to follow. Our momentum in awarding these ties has been thwarted by Covid over the past two years but we are pleased that at long last the first presentation will take place at the College on Founders' Day, Thursday 8th September at 1:30 PM.

As a consequence, we extend the following invitation:

Invitation

All Rathkeale Old Boys are cordially invited to attend the Founders' Day Assembly and the presentation of an Honours Tie to celebrated Alpinist, Donald French (1972 - 1976).
Followed by a social function for all attendees.
Trust House Theatre

Donald's life story was included in last year's Rock Runner and reveals he is one of very few people to have climbed all of New Zealand's peaks over 3000 metres. He has participated in four Everest Expeditions and established an enviable reputation as one of New Zealand's most accomplished mountaineers.

Bereavements

Michael Bruce-Smith (Student 1966 - 1968, Staff 1974 - 1978).

Michael who passed away last month will be remembered by many Old Boys from their days at school in the 1960s and 1970s. Whilst at school he was a member of Repton House, a keen tramper, and a member of the 1st XV. Later he returned to the school as a teacher and is well remembered for his involvement in Outdoor Pursuits. A lifetime of involvement in Mountain Safety and Search and Rescue preceeded his recent death from Cancer.

The College gratefully acknowledges the donation of his fine book collection to the Library and Archives and we extend our sympathy to his family.

2023 Decade Reunions

If your Year Group finished at Rathkeale in 1973, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1993, 2003, or 2013 then Queen's Birthday Weekend next year is the time to reunite.

We really encourage you to come along and are grateful to a number of Old Boys who have come forward as Facilitators:

1973 Murray Kendrick murray@reap.org.nz
1981 Steve Penn steve@nzr.nz
1982 Malcolm Holmes malcolm.holmes428@gmail.com
and Phillip Hardie Boys phil@hbinvestments.co.nz
1983 Scott Andrew scott.andrew@jnl.co.nz
2003 Ed Wallace ed@ewlivestock.co.nz
2013 Mark Sprowson msprowson.1996@gmail.com
and Paddy Tatham pdtatham@gmail.com

It's time to start planning a great weekend with your old mates! See you there.

Regards
